Publisher's Essay

This magazine was conceived in the California Pizza Kitchen on February 12, 1995, the day after the now infamous Dallas show. I was sitting at a table contemplating my salad and holding my head up, praying that the muscle relaxers would kick in soon. For those of you who missed the Big D debacle, I -- like many others that evening -- overindulged in the headbanging bit and was now suffering the consequences. Since my cervical vertebrae and I were no longer on speaking terms and my trapezius muscles had seized up completely, I was truly miserable. It was in this unique and slightly loopy state of mind that I mumbled to my pal Bill, "Y'know, we oughta start a magazine." Hope and Vasoline (misspelling deliberate) was born.

In the great spirit of He Who Thinks Of It, Does It, I contacted KT about the idea. Her enthusiastic response led me to contact others. The results of all this are now before you. H&V is a magazine for the fans of Nine Inch Nails by the fans of Nine Inch Nails. The purpose of H&V is to be a chronicle of alt.music.nin events. Wherever NINnies get together, be it Dallas, Paris, or Tokyo, we the staff will do our level best to bring it to you. From time to time, we hope to have articles about other Nothing label bands like Marilyn Manson, PWEI, and the newly signed Trust Obey. Everyone is encouraged to contribute articles, comments, and humor. Out of deference to a certain someone, however, we graciously refuse to print poetry. (If you have read the Details article, you will understand why.)

Also, regarding that certain someone: Trent, if you are out there lurking, consider this your formal invitation to join us and be a guest at our little party. KT and I will happily print your two cents should you choose to contribute it. This invitation extends to other members of the band as well.

As long as NINnies continue to get together to discuss NIN (among other subjects), we will be here, faithfully recording it all. I'm going to quote Star Trek now, so please forgive me. May we live long and prosper, all of us.
